  • Who may use the Moody Medical Library?
    Anyone may use the Moody Medical Library’s collections on site. Only those persons with a UTMB ID badge, an ID from any of the Texas Health Science Libraries Consortium (THSLC), a card from a library participating in reciprocal borrowing programs such as HARLiC, TexShare, UT Systems Libraries, or a full service contract may borrow materials. Restrictions apply to the use of Library computers and Interlibrary Loan Services.

    Can I check out materials at other libraries?
    Yes, UTMB belongs to a consortium called HARLiC which consists of the Houston Academy of Medicine, Houston Public Library, Prairie View A&M University, Rice University, Texas A&M University, Texas Southern University and University of Houston. If you have a valid UTMB ID, you can obtain a HARLiC card from our Library's Circulation desk (at no charge) which will provide you with borrowing privileges at other HARLiC libraries.

    Does AR offer classes on Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access)?
    No, we do not offer classes on Microsoft Office at this time.

    My email password does not work. What can I do?
    Call the Information Services help desk at 409-772-5200 for a password reset.

    Does AR have computers available for public access?
    Yes, public access computers are available in front of the Reference desk on the second floor of the Library and at the LRC. Additional personal computers located on the north side of the Library's second floor require a UTMB ID badge for use.

    If I am having trouble with Microsoft Office products on a lab computer, where can I get help?
    Assistance is available at the Information Services help desk at 409-772-5200. If you are in the library, contact staff at the Audiovisual desk. If you are in the LRC, contact the front desk.

    What are my payment choices for Academic Resources products and services?
    Cash, personal check, credit card or departmental IDT are accepted as payment. The LRC does not accept credit cards.

    Where can I purchase Microsoft Office products?
    Microsoft product CDs can be purchased at the UTMB Bookstore, 1st floor of the Moody Medical Library. You will need to bring your UTMB ID in order to purchase the software.

  • What are the hours for the Learning Resource Center (LRC)?
    The LRC hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

    What is the LRC? Where is it located?
    LRC is the abbreviation for the Learning Resource Center. The LRC has computers, printers and other resources available in the School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. It is located in 1.800 SAHS/SON on 11th and Mechanic Sts. Hours are 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The LRC is not open Saturdays or Sundays.

    What is the ATC? Where is it located?
    ATC is the abbreviation for the Academic Technology Center. The ATC is a facility to provide assistance in the development of multi-media web-based instructional materials. It is located in Room 2.234 on the second floor of Moody Medical Library.

    Where are study rooms available?
    Study rooms are available in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) 1.800 SAHS/SON and on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Moody Medical Library, on a first come, first served basis.

    Where are public access computers located?
    Personal computers are available at the Learning Resource Center(LRC), 1.800 SAHS/SON and on the 2nd floor, Moody Medical Library. UTMB ID is needed for computers on the north side of the Library.

  • Language Education Classes
  • Who can take the Medical Spanish courses?
    All UTMB Medical students may take these courses, available either face-to-face or online. Space availability determines whether or not medical students from other US medical schools may take the courses.

    When are the Medical Spanish courses offered?
    Face-to-face: FAMU 4004 is offered during periods 3, 5 and 8; FAMU 1043 is offered during period 11; FAMO 4041 is offered during all periods (1 through 13). Online: offered during the Spring and Fall Semesters.

    Where, when and how long do the Medical Spanish face-to-face classes meet?
    FAMU 4004 and FAMU 1043 meet at 1700 Strand, Suite 2.206, M-F, 8:30am to 12:00 noon. Hospital rounds are conducted during the last three weeks of the course. FAMO 4041 meets abroad.

    Are there any formal pre-requisites to take the Medical Spanish courses?
    Face-to-face: FAMU 4004 requires successful completion of year 2, FAMU 1043 requires successful completion of year 1, FAMO 4041 requires successful completion of year 1. Online: There are no formal pre-requisites to take the Medical Spanish online course. However, since this course is fast paced, we do recommend that you have at least high school Spanish (or equivalent spoken) and written experience with the language.

    How do I enroll or register in any of the Medical Spanish courses?

    Is there an enrollment limit for the Medical Spanish courses?
    Yes, the enrollment limit for Online, FAMU 4004 and FAMU 1043 is 12 students. However, the enrollment limit for FAMO 4041 is determined by the School Abroad.

    What is the textbook for the Medical Spanish courses?
    The textbook for Online, FAMU 4004 and FAMU 1043 is: Basic Medical Spanish (13th edition), Houghton Mifflin ISBN: 0-618-575006. Piccardo, Olimpia (August 2004). This book can be purchased through the publisher, Houghton Mifflin or at the UTMB bookstore. The textbook and/ or handouts for FAMO 4041 are provided by the School Abroad.

    I am not a UTMB or UT system student, faculty or resident. Can I still take the Medical Spanish online course?
    To take the Medical Spanish online course, you must register at UTMB.

    Can I complete the Medical Spanish online course on my own time, or do I need to be online at certain times and dates?
    You may complete the Medical Spanish online course assignments on your own time, as long as they are submitted by the dates specified in the course calendar. Oral practices and evaluations need to be scheduled at the times and dates assigned in the course calendar.

    How much time do I need to complete the activities in the Medical Spanish online course?
    The amount of time required to complete the Medical Spanish online course activities depend greatly on the student’s level of familiarity with the course content. If you have never taken a medical Spanish course before, you should expect to spend a minimum of 12 hours per week on course work.

    How many credit hours are granted for the Medical Spanish online course?
    3 Credit hours.

    Is the Medical Spanish online course offered to graduate and undergraduate students?
    Yes.

    Yes, there is a face-to-face orientation and an online orientation.

    Is it mandatory to attend the face-to-face orientation for the Medical Spanish online course?
    No, it is not mandatory but we strongly recommend it since this course is highly interactive.

    What equipment do I need to take the Medical Spanish online course?
    You need a sound-capable computer with an internet connection (modem dialup, cable modem, or DSL). You will also need speakers and a digital microphone or USB headset. It is highly recommended you have adequate virus protection and scan your computer for spyware regularly.

    What kind of internet connection and browser do I need to take the Medical Spanish online course?
    For Windows operating systems the following browsers are supported: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0; Netscape 6.2, 7.0, and 7.1; AOL 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0; and Mozilla 1.5 and 1.6.     How do I enable JavaScript to run on my browser?
    Go to http://ardev.utmb.edu/areas/classes/arclasLanguageed.asp and click on tutorials to run the set-up wizard. JavaScript is a platform that supports the audio enhancements to the course. The set-up wizard will guide you through a series of steps to enable JavaScript.

    What do I do if I forget my password to access the Medical Spanish online course?

    You will need a digital microphone to record/digitize your responses in some activities.

    How do I connect to "voice conferencing" for the Medical Spanish online course?
    Click on the Communication page from the course website in WebCT to access the Wimba Voice Direct tools. Click on the link to Wimba Chat Room, which will enable voice conferencing.

    How do I connect to the Wimba Practice Activities in the Medical Spanish online course?

    Can I download the Medical Spanish online course material?
    Yes, however, this material is copyrighted so discretion is necessary. At the top of each module, a link to print a "user friendly version" of the page is available.

  • I have a group of people that I think would benefit from library instruction. Can I book an entire class?
    Yes, special sessions of classes can be arranged. Please contact Julie Trumble at 409-772-3642 or email at jtrumble@utmb.edu.

    I'm on the faculty and my schedule always seems to conflict with the Library class schedule. How can I get this information?
    Call the Reference desk at 409-772-2372 or email ref@utmb.edu to schedule a house call with a librarian, who will come to your office and offer individual instruction on the resource(s) of interest.

  • What is the difference between OVID and Medline?
    OVID is a company that creates menu driven search interfaces to databases such as Medline or CINAHL. The information is contained in the database, while the method of searching is provided by OVID.

    Can I return unbound journals or reserve books to the Library's bookdrops?
    Please don't. All reserve materials, unbound journals and audio-visuals should only be returned to the main circulation desk on the second floor. Library book drops are checked three times a day. Remote book drops are checked three times a week. Overdue fines will continue to accrue until those items are cleared, not from the time you deposit them.

    Are study rooms available?
    The Library and LRC have study rooms available on a first come, first served basis.

    Can I get remote access to AR resources when I am outside the United States?
    Yes, if you have Internet connectivity and an active UTMB email account.

    Does the Library have back issues of current newspapers or general interest periodicals?
    No, we do not keep old issues of current newspapers or general interest periodicals.

    Does the Library own journals older than 1975?
    Yes, journals published prior to 1975 are stored in another area. To access these journals, complete a request through the ILLiad System.

    Where can I get publisher information on a journal?
    Call the Reference desk at 409-772-2372, check online @ http://www.ulrichsweb.com/UlrichsWeb/ or come in person and check either the SERIALS DIRECTORY (in Reference Z6941.S485) or ULRICH'S INTERNATIONAL PERIODICALS DIRECTORY (in Reference Z6941.U485).

    Can the Library purchase journal subscriptions or single issues for individuals?
    No, we are not able to accomodate individual subscriptions.

    How can I tell if the latest issue of a particular journal is available in print?
    You can find the latest issue received in the online library catalog. Click on the Library Catalog, select basic search, type in the name of the journal and choose "Journal title starts with". After retrieving the record scroll down to the UT-Medical Branch record and the latest received issue will be listed.

    How do I locate an audiovisual for my presentation?
    Go to the Library web page. Access the Library catalog from the service choices in the left hand column, labeled Quick Links. Click the Set Limits button at the lower right of the blue search block. Select Format, and from the pull-down menu, click on the media types needed. Pick more than one by holding down the Ctrl key on the keyboard. Type in your keyword. Limit to the appropriate Library and click Search. Unless you want these limits applied to all subsequent searches, use Clear Limits.

    Do you have any audiovisuals for which I can receive continuing education(CE) credit?
    Medicine: The Library's Network for Continuing Medical Education videos can be checked out for two weeks. A list of available videos can be found in the Library's AV department.

    Nursing: The LRC offers continuing education videotapes in the areas of nursing and health sciences. A complete listing of videos is available at the front desk.


    What is UTMB's oldest book?
    The oldest book in the collection is Rosa Medicinae by John of Gaddesden, dating from the end of the 14th century.

    Why can't I access the electronic journals from home?
    Due to licensing agreements, the Library must restrict access to many of these resources. Most of these services are produced by commercial entities that do not wish to make their products freely available. These resources are restricted by network address. If you are on the UTMB campus or have an email account, you are allowed to use all of the electronic resources that UTMB has to offer. Therefore, when you are off campus and you select a resource, you may be prompted for an ID or password.

    Why doesn't the Library have electronic access to all journals?
    The Library may not be aware of its availability, so feel free to offer it as a suggestion for purchase. The electronic version may be only available to individuals and not institutions. The price of the e-journal may be too high or its use may be subject to restrictions that the Library can't accept.

    How do I request that a title be added to the library's current e-journal holdings?
    On the Library's web page there is a link to a suggestion form under Products or use the following URL: ar.utmb.edu/areas/informresources/services/irsersuggestjournal.asp

    What equipment and software does the ATC have that I can use?
    The ATC specializes in helping you prepare multimedia for the web. There is a workstation available for faculty and their representatives to: Prepare digital imagery for the web - Create and edit images - Retouch and enhance photos - Digitize existing photographs, illustrations and 35mm slides - Download images from a digital camera Narrate and digitize(music and voice) Digitize and edit video Build and manage websites Convert existing text to browser readable formats - OCR scanning software for existing print documents - Convert word processing files into HTML - Produce PowerPoint presentations for the Web - Create PDF files for the Acrobat browser plug-in

    How do I find out if the library has a particular book or journal?
    Go to the Library home page and click on Library Catalog in the column labeled Quick Links. You can then search for items the library owns using, author, title, subject, series or journal title.Journals can also be found under the heading "Our Journals" which is the first listing under the Quick Links. If a title is found in this section, an active link will take you to that journal.

    How do I get permission to use images of portraits, pictures or microscopes from the Blocker Historical Collections?
    Call 409-772-2397 for permission to use images of the items contained in the Blocker Historical Collections.

  • Why can't my item be bound as one unit if it measures over two inches thick?
    Capacities of binding equipment dictate the maximum thickness that can be bound as a single unit.

    Is there a bindery pick-up and delivery service?
    Biocommunication's Printing and Bindery will pick up and deliver. Call 409-772-5900 for this service. The Library does not have a pick-up and delivery service. All items scheduled for library binding must be delivered and picked up at the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library.

    Does AR bind material in soft covers or spiral bindings?
    The Library only binds in hard cover with hand stitching but Biocommunications's Bindery binds in paperback and spiral.

    Does AR bind material for individuals not affiliated with UTMB?
    No, state law and university policy dictate that we only bind material for individuals affiliated with UTMB and/or the University of Texas System.

    How long does it take to have an item bound?
    Generally it takes from 10-12 working days.

    I want to have some journals bound but I'm missing some issues of a specific title. Do you supply the missing issues?
    No.

    How much does it cost to have a thesis or dissertation bound?
    The Library's basic binding charge is $15 per physical volume for each thesis or dissertation. If special handling is required, an additional charge will be assessed.

    What are the current priorities for projects using the ATC's production services?
    -- To create practical tools and templates that support web-based interactive teaching. -- To aid in the education of health professional students. --To use distance learning methods and technology as a means of delivering continuing education to health care providers. -- To provide public health education to high schools, community colleges, public libraries, community hospitals and public health agencies.

    What is the basic procedure for using the ATC's production services?
    Outline of Steps: (1) Meet with ATC staff to discuss your project idea. (2) Plan your project. Mentors may be appointed to help you. (3) Prepare an electronic proposal and submit it to the ATC via e-mail. (4) Allow two weeks for your proposal to be reviewed (the ATC will contact you once the review is complete). (5) Meet with the ATC staff to discuss the reviewed results. At this time, tasks and a timeline will be established prior to production. (6) When production begins, you will be an important team member, and the ATC will be counting on your participation. (7) As production proceeds, you will be asked to review and evaluate your project, and insure others participate as needed. (8) Approve the project once complete. Many potential ATC clients will need assistance developing project ideas and understanding the strengths and deficiencies of various educational and technical approaches. To support this need, the ATC will consult with potential clients and assign them a campus mentors with the necessary expertise, if needed. Once projects are defined, faculty will request services by submitting an electronic proposal to the ATC. Proposals will be evaluated and reviewed for educational/technological merit. Approved projects will be queued based on the priority assigned during the review.

    Is there a sample of the proposal that needs to be submitted to the ATC?

    What happens after a project for the ATC is approved?
    (1) Approved proposals will be assigned a priority and the submitter notified. (Proposals not approved may be revised and re-submitted.) (2) Based on the priority assigned during the review process, projects will be queued for production. Before production can begin, projects must have: -- All instructional content completed and reviewed by ATC staff -- A mutually agreed upon timeline and approval process for specific production checkpoints -- Funding available for any contract services or additional equipment -- Identified who will be responsible for the project once completed and, if computer or web-based, where the end-product will reside.

    What if some of the content I want to use is copyrighted?
    Did you know that violating copyright can result in "statutory damages of up to $100,000 per unauthorized use, even if it didn't cost a dime in actual damages"? Because both the ATC and its clients would be liable for the infringement of intellectual property rights, the following policy has been developed. Click here to view policy.     Yes, samples of ATC work are available by clicking here.

    Where can I duplicate an audiocasette?
    Non-copyrighted audiocassettes can be duplicated in the LRC. Self service or assisted audiocassette duplicators are provided for use. Audiocassettes are available for purchase for $.95 each.

    Where can I have a video tape duplicated?
    Non-copyrighted video tapes can be duplicated in the LRC. Blank video tapes can be purchased for $1 each and the LRC staff will duplicate the video at no charge. Duplication time is dependent upon length of the video tape.

    Where on campus can I send a local or long distance fax? How much does it cost?
    The LRC can send local and long distance faxes. Local faxes are free of charge. Long distance faxes are $.75 per page. Faxes can also be received for $.25 per page. International faxing is not available. Quick Copy can send and receive local faxes for a fee of $.75 per page. Long distance and international faxing are not available.

    Where can I burn a CD-R/RW?
    Non-copyrighted CD's can be duplicated in the LRC where there are 2 PC stations with CD burners. Blank CD's can be purchased at the front desk of the LRC for $1.40. LRC staff is available for assistance.

    Where can I view my video tape or DVD?
    At the LRC: There are 5 TV/VCRs available for viewing videotapes. Additionally, most of the PCs in the LRC labs have DVD players. Headphones for the PC stations are available at the front desk. At the Moody Medical Library: There are TV/VCRs available for viewing videotapes. Ask for help at the Audiovisual Department desk.

    How do I reserve a computer lab for my class in the Learning Resource Center (RLC) or the Library's Online Testing Center (OTC)?
    Call the LRC staff at 409-772-3025 to reserve an LRC computer lab. A confirmation will be sent to you. Call the OTC staff at 409-772-2384 to reserve the Online Testing Center.

    I need to get photos taken for my (residency application, passport, licensure, etc.) Where do I go? Do I need to make an appointment?
    The photography studio is in Levin Hall, Room 4.452. Walk-ins are welcome on weekdays 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Phone 409-772-3716.

    Where can I make color copies or print in color?
    You can get color copies made or print color copies from a computer file at Quick Copy, 1st floor of Levin Hall. A color printer is available at the Moody Medical Library.

    What is the basic procedure for using the ATC?

    Where on campus are materials dropped off for the Print Shop?
    Materials for the Print Shop can be dropped off at these locations: Quick Copy - 1st floor Levin Hall; Photography - 4th floor Levin Hall; Print Shop - 2nd floor, 19th and Harborside.

    What services are included under Biocommunications (Biocom)?
    Biocommunication includes Photography, Printing, Graphics, Classroom Services, Quick Copy and Equipment Rental.

    How do I place an order online?
    An order can be placed by using the "Initiate an Order" button, which is a semi-circle on the right hand side of the top bar on the Academic Resources web pages.

    How can I get a picture of a patient in my clinic?
    Call the Photography department at 409-772-3716 or use their internal pager number 99974.

    How can I have my experiment or procedure videotaped?
    Call Classroom Services at 409-772-8980.

    Where can I get a copy of my syllabus?
    For a list of available syllabi, call Quick Copy at 409-772-3238. Quick Copy is located on the ground floor of Levin Hall on the Market Street side.

    What is the difference between ILLiad, Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery?
    Document Delivery is the name for the service that provides copies from in-house materials or for materials borrowed from other libraries. ILLiad is the software used to provide document delivery and interlibrary loan services.

    Can I get help in setting up a listserv?
    Yes, call Academic Computing at 409-772-8423.

    Can I get help in constructing an Access database?
    Yes, call Academic Computing at 409-772-8400.

    Can I get help with setting up a web-based survey?
    Yes, call Academic Computing at 409-772-8400.

    How do I reserve a classroom?

    Yes, you can use your own laptop. Check with Classroom Services at 409-772-8980 for hook-up connection availability.

    How do I find out about new services at the Moody Medical Library?
    The Library maintains a weblog, or blog, called LibraryLink, which is accessible from the Library's main page via a button bearing the text "Library Blog", on the lower left side of the page. Urgent announcements affecting Library users are sent as needed to various departmental and divisional mailing lists. Academic Resources, the managerial umbrella organization which includes the Library, has an announcement feature called "What's New".

  • What should I do when I am having trouble connecting to library databases?
    Call the reference desk @ 409-772-2372.

    How do I get access to UTMB's dialup modem pool, and am I eligible?
    Connectivity to the Internet through the UTMB modem pool is available to individuals with a current UTMB email account. Instructions and the Modem Pool Request form are available online at www.utmb.edu/remoteaccess. A copy of the dialup software may be made in the Library, 2nd floor-Audiovisuals or in the Learning Resource Center - must bring a blank CD. If you have questions regarding the modem pool, contact Information Services Help Desk at 409-772-5200.

    Do I have to use the UTMB modem pool to access the Library resources?
    No. Remote access to most Library resources is available through the Library's web page. For complete instructions, see the Library's remote access instructions at this link ar.utmb.edu/areas/informresources/services/irserremoteaccess.asp.

    What should I do when the electronic journal requests a journal specific username and password?
    Journal password information is provided in MML’s Our Journals. Perform a search on the journal name. If a separate username/password is required, there will be a link, “Password Protected Journals”. Follow this link to obtain a list of usernames/passwords for particular journals. Report any problems with accessing electronic journals to the Library’s Reference Desk at 409-772-2372 or by using Ask a Librarian.

    Where can I obtain anti-virus software?
    e-Trust anti-virus software is available to the UTMB community. Bring in a RW CD to the Learning Resource Center, to the Library's AV computer services (2nd floor) or to Rebecca Sealy Bldg 1.710 to get the current program.

    Where can I buy a formatted disk?
    Formatted 3 1/2disks, CDs, and zip drives can be purchased at the Learning Resource Center (LRC), 1.800 SAHS/SON. Formatted disks and CDs can also be purchased at the Bookstore.

    Which software products have site licenses at UTMB?
    A site license can be obtained for Sigma Plot, SPSS, Snap and Adobe Acrobat through Academic Computing at 409-772-8423. To view other products with site licenses, go to Information Systems.
