ATC Streaming Media Server Policy Overview

1. It will not be used for telemedicine.

2. Omnes provides the physical location for the server, manages the software at the system level (MS NT 4.0 Operating System, MS IIS), and makes regular back-ups.

3 The file formats supported by the RealServer G2 software are .rm and .smi.

4.Final edited clips should be in an .au, .avi, or .wav format and uncompressed. Video clips with narration or music should be limited to approximately 10 minutes of 256 by 192 pixel video. Software** is available to convert media files to the .rm format.

5.Clips placed on the streaming media server can be accessed from web pages with appropriate hyperlinks. The ATC will provide the Internet address for your file on the server and an example of the HTML code to place on your web pages. Users need to create their own web pages to access the clips.

6.Users should keep a copy of their .rm files and store them with their original .au, .avi, and .wav files.

7.At its discretion, the Library/ATC may provide direct access to the server for faculty who are technically able to produce streaming media files and create their own hyperlinks.

Please contact the ATC at 772-7439 if you have questions.

** Academic Technology Center (ATC) has the RealProducer Plus software and instructions available to use when converting your media files. The free RealProducer software is available for download from http://www.realnetworks.com/products/authkit/index.html. (This version may not be completely compatible with the UTMB server.)
